Western art as we know it today has it's roots in the early Italian Renaissance. At this time artists developed a new realism through the development of perspective and a more rigourous approach to observing and recording the natural world. Great developments were occuring in Northern Europe too where Van Eyck is credited with the invention of oil painting around 1410. An atmosphere of scientific innovation and a powerful church fuelled the careers of Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Raphael and other masters of the high rennaisance in the late 15th and Early 16th Centuries. In Venice and Spain El Greco and Titian developed a freer, more expressive approach whilst in Northern Europe artists were beginning to paint everyday life in closer detail than ever before. The 1600s saw the rise of another great genre, Baroque painting. Characterised by more natural compositions and dramatic lighting Rembrandt, Rubens and Caravaggio were amongst the leading exponents. The 1700s saw French and English painters such as David, Ingres, Delacroix and Turner rising to prominence with neoclassicism and romanticism. The later of these movements favoured a more naturalistic approach than ever before and was the precursor to French Impressionism. Enjoy a slice of classical art history in your own home with a print from one of art's great masters that has stood the test of time.
