The 20th century was a tumultous and exhilirating period with an art history to match. In the first half of the century artists reacted to the invention of photography, the chaos and horrors of war and the unprecedented mechanisation of everyday life developing Cubism, Surrealism and Futurism. From the Bauhaus movement the notion of entirely removing the subject came about and the concept of abstract art was born. Later, artists either created a commentary on the realities of modern life, in Pop art, or removed all reference to it as in Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism.
