The French Impressionist movement's name came from Monet's early work, |
Impression: Sunrise; the term was originally intended as a criticism. The Early group of artists included Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, and Mary Cassatt. These artists worked swiftly and out-of-doors in their efforts to capture the fleeting effects of light.
Post-Impressionism was not a coherent movement as such but refers to some of the main artistic styles that followed impressionism. These included Fauvism (Matisse etc.), Nabism (Bonnard and Vuillard), Pointillism (Seurat and Signac) and the works of Cezanne and Van Gogh that were hugely influential to later generations of artists. |
