What is a droplet print? The droplet print is the next stage along the evolutionary chain from the giclee. This is an entirely new digital printing process, in which a combination of huge technological developments in the printing world and the traditional expertise of top craftsmen allow us now to print reproductions of the very highest quality and fidelity to the original.
|
Why is it different? "Giclee" is becoming a dirty word; it has become the generic term for almost anything which has been printed digitally, whether the printing took place on a huge machine or the cheapest home colour printer and where technology generally requires the printer to use a coated paper. The new droplet process allows us to use the beautiful uncoated papers, which are better for image reproduction because they allow the ink more easily to travel down the paper fibres and into the sheet ("wicking")

Quality We are confident that the print quality of our droplets is the best to be found in this country and matches anything else in the world.
Printed onto the highest quality archival substrates and using only very specialised inks, droplet prints have the remarkable colour saturation and continuous tone characteristics one would expect of an original painting. In fact, with an apparent visual resolution of over 1800 dpi (dots per inch), distinguishing a droplet print from an original can be very difficult, even to the expert eye.
|
Our droplets are generally printed onto acid-free calcium carbonate-buffered archival watercolour paper or onto fine archival-quality cotton canvas coated with an acid free primer. On light-fastness, the ink and paper combinations generally used meet the standards of both the Fine Art Trade Guild's blue wool scale and those of Wilhelm Imaging Research in America.
And, leaving aside the technical specification, the quality of the print is fantastic!

Craftsmen In an age of increasing mechanisation and computerisation, droplet printing relies entirely on the skill of a craftsman to obtain the best possible result. Each individual sheet of paper takes 90 minutes to print and the unique machines have to be checked and reset between each sheet.
Every image is checked for colour by an expert in the field; every unusual scan is taken by museum-trained craftsmen on a huge machine, of which there is currently only one in Britain. On this equipment almost anything you like can be reproduced, ranging from limited editions to beautiful digital reproductions from old books, manuscripts, maps, watercolours, sporting memorabilia, colour and black and white photography, gold leaf decoration, medieval bookplates, engravings, icons old posters and anything else you can think of...

Flexibility
The beauty of the new gouttelette process is that you can choose to print exactly what you want.
- Quantity - we can print one gouttelette, or as many as you like.
- Size - we can print as large or as small as you like.
- Medium - we expect that most gouttelettes will be printed onto archival uncoated paper or canvas, but many other substrates have been used, ranging from silk and acetate to leather and steel.
