Carp swimming upwards

Born in 1760 in Edo (modern day Tokyo) to a family of artisans, Hokusai began painting at the age of six. Despite constant challenges in his career Hokusai endowed the world with some of the most arresting evocative and historically crucial depictions of landscape and nature. Works include his famous woodcuts of Mount Fuji and The Great Wave of Kanagawa. French impressionist Monet took great inspiration from Hokusai, adorning his Giverny home with the renowned artist's prints. Our collection includes his best-loved works.
