| Michelangelo, Buonarroti(1475-1564), grew up in Florence and trained under Ghirlandaio and Bertoldo. He soon showed his virtuosity, and around 1496 carved his first major works in marble. Between 1510 and 1514 he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, such a masterpiece that he was immediately hailed as the greatest artist on Earth. Twenty years later they asked him to come back and paint the The Last Judgement" on the altar wall. So numerous were his achievements as painter, sculptor, and architect that he was the subject of two biographies in his own life time." |
