Derain, Andre (1880-1954)
Andre Derain, who began his artistic career as a Fauve, was born in Chatou, a suburb of Paris. An excellent scholar, he planned to become an engineer before suddenly deciding to study art at the Academie Julian. Derain shared a studio with his friend Vlaminck, painted with Matisse near Marseilles, and was a frequent visitor to the studios of Braque and Picasso.
As a Fauvist Derain was principally concerned with line and colour and enjoyed squeezing tubes of bright colour on his canvas, particularly pinks, blues, and violets. In 1908, Derain turned to studies of form and structure and experimented with Cubism, Impressionism, and the styles of van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cézanne. An interest in the Renaissance led him to a further study of paintings from the past, notably the Italian primitives and the Gothic masters.
In addition to painting, Derain worked as a wood-engraver and illustrated many famous books, among them Pantagruel by Rabelais. He also made a great many sets and costumes for the Ballet Russe. After 1920, he painted still lifes, classical landscapes, and some of the finest portraits of his day, although none of these were ever exhibited.
Derain was a strange and moody individual who retired to the country to live in almost complete solitude. Early in 1954, he showed symptoms of both eye trouble and some mental incapacity and he was treated at a clinic near Paris. Shortly after his release, he was hit by a car. His death, a few weeks later, was caused by shock rather than by the minor injuries he received.
