Hicks, Edward (1780-1849) Edward Hicks was born in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, the son of a British colonial official. He became an apprentice coach maker at the age of 13, and showed ability in sign painting. Hicks became a Quaker, gave up his brushes, and bought a farm. His farm did not prosper and he turned to itinerant preaching in the northern United States and Canada. He earned great renown as a preacher but, in 1819, decided that a good Christian must earn his living with his hands. Since his only manual skill was painting, he went back to art and put on canvas his sincere beliefs in religion and peaceful cooperation. |
