Delvaux, Paul (1897- ) Paul Delvaux was born in Antheit, Belgium, and attended the Brussels Art Academy. Delvaux painted in a Neo-lmpressionist style until 1936 when he encountered the work of the Surrealist painters. He was initially disconcerted by their work, but became fascinated by the paintings of Rene Magritte. The style and subject matter of his art altered radically after seeing the work of Magritte in 1936 and has changed very little since. His aim was no longer to faithfully interpret the exterior world but to explore the secret domain of his inner life. Delvaux visited Italy and studied the painters of the 14th Century, their linear perspective, architecture and depiction of women. The general style of his work is drawn from early Renaissance studies of perspective. Delvaux pays meticulous attention to detail, and uses perspective to suggest a distancing from reality into a dream world. Women form the focus of Delvaux's art. They are shown in a context that is wistful and passive. They sit silently and wait endlessly; they are never in dialogue with men, who enter their world only as old men, doctors, professors or young boys. Delvaux's dream world is meticulously rendered and filled with a nostalgic sadness that transforms his paintings into something elusive and unreal. |
