Chirico, Giorgio de (1888-1978)
Giorgio de Chirico was born in Greece to Italian parents. The son of a railroad worker, he developed an early interest in art. He studied in Athens, Munich and Italy, and settled in Paris in 1912 until the First World War began. In Germany he was influenced by Bocklin and Nietzsche. He returned to Paris to live there from 1925 to 1940.
A noted pre-Symbolist, de Chirico was one of the first artists to evoke a sense of mystery and poetry through the juxtaposition of seemingly unlikely objects. He utilized highly individual motifs in his art, often autobiographical. His enigmatic groupings somehow suggest an elusive, larger meaning that might be derived if only one had the key.
In 1917, with Carlo Carra, he founded the Scuola Metafisica", a loosely formed group dedicated to the exploration of the mystery and fantasy underlying surface reality."
