Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri (1864-1901), is the best-known painter of everyday 19th Century Paris. As a child he broke both his legs and his growth was severely stunted. He was a superb draughtsman and produced posters, prints, pastels and oil paintings depicting the cafes, dance halls, streets and brothels of the day. His circle of friends included Van Gogh, and Oscar Wilde. He was an excessive drinker, which killed him aged 37. |
