was a French painter, whose work went from being strikingly intense and dark, to light, free and impressionistic in his later years. His most famous works such as Olympia" and "Dejeuner sur l'herbe" were painted with a limited range of colours and strong contrast of light and shade. Although technically he was one of the last great academic painters he was often shunned by the establishment due to his controversial subject matter." |
