Matisse, Henri (1869-1954),
is regarded alongside Picasso as one of the most influential 20th Century artists. Impressionism and the Nabis painters Bonnard and Vuillard inspired his early work. By 1905 however, his paintings were full of spatial distortion and a riot of colour and the Fauve (literally meaning wild beast) movement was started. Later, the arabesque style of North Africa influenced him. Finally, in his last years he created simple motifs using paper cut outs, gouache and crayons.
